Exploring forgotten generations is one thing genealogy enthusiasts do. I suppose genealogy is about family, yet sometimes we need to take a moment and pay more attention to the family that is here and now.
It’s Easter Sunday, which is one reason I am thinking of family, in a more recent context.
When I was a child we would meet with cousins at my Grandma Hilda’s, for the traditional family Easter dinner. Grandma has long since gone, as are the uncles, and the cousins have scattered, and a few have passed on.
When I was a teenager we were living in Havasu, and Easter vacation meant a working holiday at our family’s resort. We didn’t complain, it was great fun. And during my senior year at high school, I met my husband over Easter vacation.
When my children were young, we would decorate eggs and hide them in the back yard of our mountain home. We had some dear friends who brought their daughter over each year, to help our two discover the hidden eggs. Our children are still close, yet sadly, those dear friends are going through a bitter divorce.
This year our two children are hours and miles away, each with a fiance and new life ahead of them. My in-laws, who live near us, opted for an afternoon in Laughlin, rather than a family Easter dinner. And so, this year we spent a quiet Easter dinner – my husband, mother and myself. It was a pleasant afternoon, yet I did recall those treasured memories from Easters past, and look forward to new family memories in our future.
