Things change and yet, stay the same

What does this post have to do with genealogy? It is an example of how generations don’t necessarily change, they adapt to the changes around them.

Last night my mother-in-law gave my husband an article to bring over to my mom. She’d cut it from one of her magazines, and it discussed knee problems, something my mother has been experiencing.

It isn’t the topic of the article that spurred me to write this post. It is the fact that my mother-in-law has a penchant for cutting out newspaper and magazine articles, and sharing them with others. She frequently sends my daughter articles about the Masche sextuplets, whose parents were classmates of my daughter.

But, she is not the only one with a habit of article sharing. My mom does it, and so does my sister’s mother-in-law. If they find something they deem of interest in the midst of their junk mail, newspaper or magazine, it gets cut out and delivered to the person they believe most has use of the information.

Truthfully, the practice drives me nuts. When Mom brings me some slip of paper, she is sure I must see, it reminds me of the bin full of junk mail I just trashed. If I don’t look at my junk mail, why does she think I need to look at hers?

Before I continue to pick on the grandmothers, I must acknowledge it is a generation thing. And, in all fairness, our generation does the same thing. The difference, we don’t clip articles, we send links.
